St. Catharines awards rail-trail job to Rankin

ST. CATHARINES, ONT. — The City of St. Catharines has announced it has awarded the contract for the Grantham Rail Trail Improvements Project to Rankin Construction.

The existing Grantham Rail Trail is being transformed into a 3.65 kilometre multi-use pathway through the construction of a three-metre-wide asphalt surface on city property, creating a year-round active transportation route.

Rankin, the design-builder, is scheduled to start work in mid-September 2022. The construction should take approximately 40 working days to complete with final restorations, weather permitting, stated a release.

The design-build project includes reconstruction of the existing rail trail to a three-metre-wide multi-use asphalt trail; drainage improvements, including culvert installation; sidewalk and accessible curb ramp improvements; installation of trail connections and sidewalk extensions to existing sidewalks and pathways; and installation of trail furnishings, such as signs, entrance gates, benches and waste receptacles.

Sections of the Grantham Rail Trail within the active construction limits will be closed off to pedestrian traffic for the duration of the construction.

The Grantham Rail Trail should have signs saying Grantham Rail Trail on the original railway crossing signs. Looking like an X
