Feds allocate $6.8M to new Labrador transmission line

LABRADOR CITY, N.L. — The federal government has announced $6.8 million in funding towards a new power transmission line and terminal station in Menihek in western Labrador.

The project involves building a new terminal station and a 27-kilometre transmission line sending power from Nalcor Energy’s Menihek Hydroelectric Generating Station to the Tata Steel Minerals Canada processing site, stated an Aug. 16 release.

The new line will enable Tata Steel Minerals to offset diesel-fired generation with hydropower, reducing the mine’s diesel consumption by up to 40 per cent, the statement noted.

The new line will be constructed by Nalcor Energy.

Funding comes through the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan.
