Bruce Power Net Zero announces hydrogen initiatives

Bruce Power Net Zero announces hydrogen initiatives
SHUTTERSTOCK

TIVERTON, ONT. – Bruce Power Net Zero Inc. (BPNZ) has announced plans to develop opportunities to market and mass produce hydrogen.

Its initiatives are intended to enable Bruce Power to become a leader in hydrogen production in conjunction with its nuclear capabilities, states a recent release.

Bruce Power annually produces 30 per cent of Ontario’s energy. A report issued by the Nuclear Innovation Institute linked nuclear and storage technologies such as pump storage, where nuclear technology can be used to enable other net-zero technologies.

“Hydrogen is an ideal complementary technology to nuclear,” said Richard Horrobin, Bruce Power’s vice-president of business development and energy innovation, in a statement. “Our Clean Energy Frontier region of Bruce, Grey and Huron counties, which is rich in clean energy infrastructure and expertise, is uniquely positioned to drive opportunities for potential hydrogen partnerships and projects, leveraging the advantages of nuclear, to achieve a net-zero future.”

BPNZ recently joined the Hydrogen Business Council, a group of business leaders advocating for hydrogen energy, and has also announced the appointment of Matt Fairlie as senior adviser, hydrogen development. Fairlie has 40 years of experience with hydrogen systems and was a founder of Next Hydrogen Corporation. Prior to that, he served as executive vice-president, founder and CTO of Stuart Energy; has served as a director and board vice-chairman of the National Hydrogen Association in Washington, D.C.; and is founder and first chairman of Hydrogen Business Council of Canada.

BPNZ also has launched an Expressions of Interest process to solicit ideas in the nuclear, hydrogen and other fields.
