The British Columbia Work Zone Safety Alliance has started a new "Cone Zone" roadwork safety campaign that will focus on drivers reducing driving speed, avoiding distraction and respecting the road as a workplace.

The goal of the program is to raise awareness of the dangers faced by those working on the side of the road in the “cone zone” and reducing worker injuries and deaths.

In the last ten years, 386 WorkSafeBC claims were made by workers, who were struck by motor vehicles. Of the claims, 46 per cent were classified as serious injuries and three per cent resulted in the death of the worker.

The alliance is made up a number of organizations, including the B.C. Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association, the B.C. Construction Safety Alliance, the B.C. Flagging Association and others.
