The Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) celebrated industry excellence in British Columbia at their 27th Annual Awards of Excellence, held on Oct. 21 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. "This year we had 128 nominations that cover 37 projects estimated to be over $500 million worth in construction value," VRCA president Fiona Famulak said.
"There were a large number of projects that incorporated a lot of wood in their design, which is great to see, because that’s normally not what we see in the Industrial Commercial Institutional (ICI) industry."
Famulak highlighted the Wood Innovation and Design Centre (WIDC) in Prince George, B.C. as an example of an innovative project utilizing wood. The WIDC went on to win a Gold award in the Manufacturers and Suppliers category. Three Silver Award winners were chosen in August in 12 different project categories. One of the winners from each category was selected as the Gold Award of Excellence winner and was called to the stage at the recent gala. In addition to the project categories, the VRCA also gave out several non-project awards, including the Lifetime Achievement award, which was given to Paul Myers of Keith Plumbing and Heating.
Myers recently donated $25 million to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation for a new patient facility and future redevelopment of the hospital. Grant McMillan, who recently retired as president of the Council of Construction Associations, was inducted as a VRCA Life Member, and Alma Garnett from Convoy Supply Ltd. won the Outstanding Woman in Construction award.
The U40 Excellence in Construction award went to Fraser McIntosh of Bird Construction and the Education Leadership award went to Randy Callaghan from PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. The Member of the Year award went to Graham Construction & Engineering LLP.
Safety awards went to Houle Electric Limited for their superior safety record in the Trade Contractor category (200,000 person hours or more) and to Scott Construction Corp in the General Contractor category (100,000 to 199,999 person hours.)
In the Zero Frequency Injury Rate category of Safety awards, McLeod Masonry International Corp won for Trade Contractor (10 to 49,000 person hours), Graham Construction & Engineering LLP won in General Contractor (50,000 to 99,999 person hours) and Omicron Canada Inc. won in the General Contractor (200,000 or more person hours) category.
