Edmonton – Wood WORKS! Alberta recognized architects, engineers and project teams pushing the boundaries of wood design at this year’s ninth annual Prairie Wood Design Awards gala.
The Prairie Wood Design Awards program recognizes projects and organizations that advance the use of wood in construction through design excellence, advocacy and innovation.
The winning projects were selected from over 30 entries by a jury panel which included James Brown, director, Bing Thom Architects; Herbert Enns, professor, Department of Architecture University of Manitoba; and Stephen Teeple, principal, Teeple Architects.
"The winning projects from our awards program demonstrate Alberta’s increasing commitment to exploring options for wood in construction," said Rory Koska, Wood WORKS! Alberta program director.
"The advancements in wood research and technology are breaking down barriers for our industry and increasing the options for the design community."
One of the winners was StructureCraft Builders for the Bow River Bridge which received the jury’s choice award.
Set over the Bow River in the town of Banff, the 113-metre-long timber bridge both serves pedestrian traffic and provides a new sanitary crossing replacement.
Mcfarlane Biggar Architects + Designers Inc. Equilibrium Consulting and Ledcor won for work on the Fort McMurray Airport.
The team built a new 15,000 square-metre three-level airport. Cross laminated timber panels were integrated into the roof structure, along with exposed structural glulam members.
Other winning projects included: Meadows Community Recreation Centre & Meadows Branch Library, Borden Park Pavilion, Silver Sage – The Sun Lodge, Forest Service Shed – Fort McMurray Historical Society and Kingsway/Royal Alex LRT Station.
