The Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) celebrated British Columbia’s construction achievements on Oct. 25 at its 29th Annual Awards of Excellence, held at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
Over 95 entrants were in the competition this year, with 50 projects selected for a total worth of approximately $1.1 billion in construction value. Twenty-five awards were given out including 15 Gold Awards, nine Outstanding Achievement Awards and a Heritage Award, which went to Scott Construction Group, Deltec Electric Limited, Kits Glass, Solid Rock Steel Fabricating Company and Tek Roofing for their combined work on the Christ Church Cathedral Restoration and Renewal project in the heart of downtown Vancouver.
"Compared to last year, it’s quite a jump. Last year’s construction value was around $500 million, so it’s nice to see projects are working their way through, substantial completion is being achieved and then projects are going into the nominations," said VRCA president Fiona Famulak.
The General Contractors Over $45 Million Award went to Ledcor Construction Limited for the TFN-Tsawwassen Mills Mall, with the $20 to $45 Million Award going to Fraser River Pile & Dredge GP Incorporated for the Squamish Terminals – Berth 1 Reconstruction.
"The retail market is a very difficult market. It’s changing, it’s very last minute, and to have a team like we did that was able to understand the client’s needs and react and achieve the goals we did is fantastic," said Ledcor director of national accounts Peter Bond.
The Tenant Improvement Award went to Turner Construction Company for the Miller Thomson Office Renovation project. The winner in the Up to $20 Million category is Graham Infrastructure LP for the W.A.C. Bennett Dam Spillway Chute Upgrade. Graham also won an award in the Construction Workplace Health and Safety Innovation category for their Safety Day and Environmental Day initiatives. Graham Construction & Engineering also won a Superior Safety Record Award in the General Contractor 50,000 to 99,999 person hours category.
Other Superior Safety Record Award winners include Houle and Status Electrical Corporation in the Trade Contractor 200,000 or more hours category. Safety awards in the Zero Frequency Injury Rate category went to McLeod Masonry International Corporation in the Trade Contractor – 10 to 49,000 person hours, and to Western Pacific Enterprises Limited for Trade Contractor – 50,000 to 99,999 person hours. The Trade Contractor 200,000 or more person hours went to the Gisborne Group.
Turner Construction won in the General Contractor 50,000 to 99,999 person hours category and Omicron Canada Incorporated was the winner in the 200,000 or more person hours category.
The Electrical Contractors awards went to Houle in the up to $2 million category for their work on the Prince Rupert Terminal Upgrade, and in the over $8 million category for the North Island Hospital Project in the Comox Valley. F&M Installations Limited won for the BC Hydro Big Bend Substation in Burnaby, B.C. in the $2 million to $8 million category.
The Mechanical Contractors Award in the up to $3 million category went to Keith Plumbing and Heating Company Limited for their work on the Surrey Bio-Fuel Processing Facility as well as in the over $8 million category for the North Island Hospital Project. The $3 million to $8 million award went to PML Professional Mechanical Limited for the Marine Gateway Energy Centre project.
The Gold Award for Manufacturers and Suppliers went to Garibaldi Glass Inc. for the Pacific Centre Redevelopment Project. The Chairman’s Trade award (up to $1 million) was given to Maxwell Floors for the Joseph & Rosalie Segal Family Health Centre, while the President’s Trade award ($1 million to $3 million) went to Tom Wood Contracting Limited for Seaspan’s new head office. The Founder’s Trade award ($3 million to $7 million) was won by Wesbridge Steelworks Limited for the Langara Science & Technology Building and the Director’s Trade award (over $7 million) was Flynn Canada’s win for the HUB, located at King George station in Surrey, B.C.
This years’ Outstanding Woman in Construction Award went to Helen Goodland of Brantwood Consulting and the U40 Excellence in Construction Award, given to a VRCA member under the age of 40, was won by William Donnellan from IRL Construction Ltd.
Kristi Seddon from Ledcor Construction Limited won the Education Leadership Award and the Member of the Year was Axiom Builders Incorporated.
The newest Life Member Inductee is Richard Stockstad and Dolphe Hoffman was given a Lifetime Achievement award.
"We expect the nominations to grow, given the business of the industry. British Columbia is the crown jewel in Canada’s construction marketplace and we expect the industry here to be busy until 2021 or 2022. So it’s a good news story for our members and for the industry," Famulak said.
