VICTORIA – The province of British Columbia has created a new advisory council to provide strategic advice to the government on climate action paired with economic growth.
The Climate Solutions and Clean Growth Advisory Council will provide advice on actions and policies that can contribute to carbon pollution reductions and optimize opportunities for sustainable economic development and job creation, explains a release.
Industry representatives on the council include Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers past president and CEO Dave Collyer and BC and Yukon Territory Building and Construction Trades Council past president Lee Loftus. The co-chairs of the council are Clean Energy Canada executive director Merran Smith and Teck Resources Limited sustainability and external affairs senior vice-president Marcia Smith.
"We all have a role to play in tackling the global challenge of climate change. I look forward to working with Minister Heyman and my fellow panel members as we seek constructive and collaborative solutions to advance climate action while ensuring that our economy is competitive," Merran Smith said in a statement.
The council will hold its initial meeting soon, followed by quarterly meetings where advice and feedback on climate policy will be forwarded to the environment and climate change strategy minister and the climate action secretariat on a regular basis.
"Our council’s mandate to provide not just advice, but accountability, is critical to turn good ideas into lasting results," Marcia Smith added.
Karen Tam Wu, the acting B.C. director of the Pembina Institute, has also joined the council.
"In light of the stalled climate action and missed opportunities of recent years, B.C. needs to act swiftly and decisively to ratchet up measures to curb carbon pollution. I look forward to advising the government on how to jumpstart clean growth and secure a prosperous economy, safe communities, and healthy families in B.C.," Wu said.
