Gas Tax Fund to be used to fund NWT infrastructure

The federal government of Canada is making funds available for public infrastructure in the Northwest Territories through the Gas Tax Fund Administrative Agreement.

The Canada Gas Tax Fund is designed to provide close to $22 billion in funding for municipalities over the 10-year life of the New Building Canada Plan from 2014 to 2024.

The renewed agreements will govern the flow of federal funds to each province and territory over the next 10 years from 2014-15 until 2023-24.

The fund has previously supported projects such as a local youth centre solar power initiative in Paulatuk, a water treatment plant in Yellowknife, and a Utilidor replacement in Inuvik.

"Community governments across the Northwest Territories are accessing the Gas Tax Fund to build and improve infrastructure. We are happy to see that this funding has become more predictable and permanent and look forward to continuing to access these funds to address local needs," Aklavik mayor and Northwest Territories Association of Communities president Charles Furlong said.
