Labour group opposes Quebec asbestos mine expansion

Journal Of Commerce

An organization representing Quebec unions is recommending against the approval of any expansion projects at Quebec asbestos mines due in part to concern about the use of asbestos cement in construction.

Confederation des syndicats nationaux (CSN) Friday said it wants the federal government to add asbestos, a known carcinogen also called chrysotile, to the list of hazardous materials listed in the Rotterdam Convention. CSN officials are concerned about the health and safety standards applicable to asbestos in construction, as well as workers performing maintenance and repair jobs.

With Friday’s announcement, CSN is changing its position on asbestos due to a ruling by the World Health Organization that no concentration of asbestos dust is known to be safe. CSN’s confederal workplace health and safety committee decided to start discussing with unions a schedule to transition workers in asbestos mines to other jobs.
