The Calgary police and Alberta safety authorities are investigating a hit and run involving a speeding car and a worker in an underpass construction zone.
"Right now we have officers on site completing the inspection, but this is a police investigation” said Sorcha Thomas, spokesperson of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety. “No orders have been issued."
A hit and run collision occurred between a motor vehicle and a pedestrian at Blackfoot Trail, under Ogden Road SE on April 29 at about 12:15 am.
“A worker was conducting sandblasting at the Portland Street Bridge on the Blackfoot Trail, when a car drove through a series of barrels,” said Thomas.
“The worker was struck by the car and later taken to hospital.” According to a Calgary police press release, the right curb lane of westbound Blackfoot Trail was closed to vehicle traffic to allow maintenance and construction on the north wall of the underpass.
“The victim was thrown into the air and landed in the eastbound lanes of Blackfoot Trail,” said the release. “The offending vehicle never slowed down and fled westbound on Blackfoot Trail.
The victim was transported to Foothills Hospital where he was treated for multiple fractures and is currently listed as serious, but stable, condition.”
Thomas said the worker sustained a broken femur and two broken bones in the other leg.
The contractor on the project is Concrete USL.
The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section is investigating.
They are looking for a dark coloured car, possibly a BMW, which was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed.
The construction area was well lit and posted with numerous warning signs. The posted speed limit was reduced from 60 kph to 50 kph through the construction area.
