After eight years of work getting the Site C project scheduled for construction, the project’s executive vice president, Susan Yurkovich has decided to step away from the project.
"I love the project and I love my team and I have given it everything I can to get it where we have an approved project," Yurkovich said, who was able to guide the project through a rigorous planning and review process.
She explained that between approval and waiting for construction to being seemed a good "natural break" to transition to another project leader.
"It’s been a great ride and it’s been amazing," she said. "I feel really good about what we achieved."
She said she plans to take several months off before pursuing other options.
Diane McSherry will take over the position in June. She has spent more than 30 years in project delivery in the public and private sectors. Yurkovich said McSherry’s recent experience working on the John Hart generating station upgrade and Ruskin Dam upgrade will also equip her for heading up Site C. Yurkovich will stay on for several months to assist with the transition.
The $8.8 billion project is the largest in the province’s history. In December 2014, the Site C project received approval from the provincial government to proceed to construction which is scheduled to begin this summer and wrap up in 2024.
However, the project still faces pending legal challenges from Peace River Valley landowners and First Nations groups. It also faces criticism from the province’s trade unions, which have taken issue with the open shop model being used for the site’s labour.
