SICA launches construction awards for B.C. interior

KELOWNA, B.C. – The Southern Interior Construction Association (SICA) will host its first annual Industry Awards of Excellence this year.
Awards for the industry were previously held by the Business Examiner magazine, but as part of the association celebrating its 50th year, it will be taking ownership of the event.

“It’s in our mission statement to provide leadership and promote excellence and what better to do that than to do the awards ourselves and promote the buildings going up in the interior right now,” said Jason Henderson.

The nomination deadline for the awards is July 31 and covers new institutional, commercial, industrial building, multi-family, recreational or renovation projects that have been completed between July 31, 2018 and June 30, 2019. SICA Member of the Year, Education Leadership, Innovation & Productivity, and Safety Awards will also be chosen.

The event will recognize the contributions of individuals, projects and organizations who are leaders in construction. The awards program is open to all relevant organizations and individuals who meet the requirements of each award.

“SICA is proud to be hosting our first awards where we can honour individuals and companies who are building our communities,” said Henderson.

The categories for the Building Awards include automotive, hospitality, industrial, mixed use commercial/residential, multi-family, office and retail. There is also a category for craft beer or winery.

“The calibre of the wineries has really gone up,” said Henderson. “They are becoming more event spaces and are architecturally beautiful. It’s been a big industry on the Okanagan for a long time and it is hitting an international level now, with some wineries now catering to international clients and I think it’s an area that deserves special attention.”

Each Building Award submission will be judged on financial performance, meeting its schedule, value engineering/innovations, challenges/resolutions, safety record, site co-operation, material management, appearance and function. The awards gala will take place Oct. 3. Those wanting to nominate a project can visit awards.sicaevents.ca

“It’s been a big year for us,” said Henderson. “It was a good year to do the launch and celebrate ourselves as well as the industry. I think we want to encourage the industry to take pride in the what we build, so send in nominations and celebrate the cool buildings going up and the quality of work being done.”
