OTTAWA — Bob Gomes, former president and CEO of Stantec, is the recipient of the 2021 Beaubien Award, which recognizes individuals for their lifetime contributions to ACEC and to the advancement of the consulting engineering profession.
The awards were handed out at the Canadian Consulting Engineering awards virtual celebration presented by the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – Canada (ACEC) last week.
Born and raised in Edmonton, Gomes earned his degree in civil engineering at the University of Alberta and joined Stantec in 1988 as an urban land project manager. For almost 30 years he held many leadership roles with the company, culminating with president and CEO in 2009.
As CEO, Gomes oversaw significant growth and the firm’s expansion into multiple global markets, including Europe and the Middle East. He facilitated a restructuring and refinement of roles and responsibilities to align the growth of the business lines and oversaw a company re-branding that challenged the “why” of the company’s strategy and articulated a new purpose and values for the firm, states a release.
He was also instrumental in the design of and securing space and naming rights to the Stantec Tower, its global headquarters, the tallest building west of Toronto, which consolidated the firm’s Edmonton offices.
He also spent time as the president of the Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA), for which he received the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Distinguished Service. He is also a past chair of the Urban Development Institute and the Edmonton Non-Profit Housing Corporation.
The 2022 Allen D. Williams Scholarship was co-awarded to Lindsay Bolton, P.Eng., of CBCL Group.
Bolton went from junior engineer to the firm’s lead for water resources and climate change. She headed CBCL’s response to a five-year, nationwide federal standing offer for climate change adaptation services and played a key role in the firm’s successful nationwide number one ranking in four of the six regions under consideration.
Bolton is an active participant in many professional organizations, including ACEC-New Brunswick, the Atlantic Canada Water and Wastewater Association and the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association.
She is passionate about advancing diversity and inclusion and has been a member of the APEGNB Diversity and Inclusion committee and was instrumental in the completion of Women in Consulting Engineering Study.
The 2022 Allen D. Williams Scholarship was also awarded to Siobhan Robinson, M.A.Sc, P.Eng., of Kerr Wood Leidal.
As a project engineer with a focus on water supply and treatment, her technical and interpersonal skills are best evidenced by the high demand for her participation in projects by clients and internal project managers, states a release, adding her successful management of projects of increasing size and complexity resulted in her rise within the firm at an early stage in her career. Robinson also took a prominent role in the business development and project management of the firm’s Water and Supply and Treatment Sector group.
In her spare time she volunteers in a variety of capacities with ACEC-Canada, ACEC-BC, the BC Water and Waste Association, and Science World’s Scientists and Innovators in the Schools program.
