The redevelopment of the Royal Columbian Hospital is a $1.49B three-phase redevelopment in New Westminster, B.C. which is funded by the British Columbia government, Fraser Health and the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation. It is scheduled for completion by 2026.
Recently, EllisDon, which is working on phases two and three of the project, conducted a site tour for the Vancouver Regional Construction Association’s Young Construction Leaders group and showed them some of the extensive work, ranging from demolition to building expansion, all while a significant medical facility continues to operate 24/7 during construction.
EllisDon construction manager John Mackenzie spoke to the Journal of Commerce about the challenges of the massive build along with constructing a temporary building for hospital workers and rerouting exits and entrances to minimize disruption.
Mackenzie also said while the project required adaptability the collaboration between EllisDon and Fraser Health is “working well” and will continue to bear fruit as the project moves towards completion.
