EllisDon announces new model for Indigenous apprenticeship opportunities

EllisDon announces new model for Indigenous apprenticeship opportunities
PROVINCE OF ALBERTA — EllisDon recently announced a project it has been working on for months to increase Indigenous participation in apprenticeships.

CALGARY, ALTA. — On National Indigenous Peoples Day, EllisDon announced its ALLiED (ALL inclusive at EllisDon) Outreach Team has spent the last six months focusing on creating construction sector opportunities for Indigenous people in Alberta by developing a new apprenticeship model.

EllisDon officials explained the model is designed to be tweaked for applications in other parts of the country.

Hector Saldivida, senior health, safety and environmental co-ordinator, is leading the project team which includes Willow Spring Construction general manager Tom Chisholm, operations manager Cory Raketti, safety director Craig Wiltse, business process manager Mirela Cupovic and others.

Their work includes forming relationships with educators and Indigenous leaders to connect Indigenous communities with construction careers.

EllisDon also noted the project recently received endorsement from Genevieve A. Fox, education director of the Blackfoot Confederacy Nation in Alberta.

“With this endorsement, ALLiED will continue to forge both Indigenous and educational relationships that will allow our Indigenous apprenticeship program to flourish beyond the borders of Alberta, into other markets where EllisDon can impact the lives of these communities with the hope of creating meaningful careers in our industry,” stated the company in a media release.
