PHOTO SUBMITTED — The Winnipeg Airports Authority recently broke ground on a $27-million, 96,000-square-foot multi-use Ground Services Equipment building.

The Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) recently broke ground on a $27-million, 96,000-square-foot multi-use building that is expected to consolidate the WAA’s service equipment and machinery in one central location.

“Today is about an investment to get ready for what comes next,” said Barry Rempel, the WAA’s president and CEO, in a press release. “It is actually not just about the building, but it’s about what this facility will then enable.”

The Ground Services Equipment (GSE) building, the newest addition to the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport, will house the majority of machinery and vehicles that are used at the airport such as “tugs” to tow and reposition airplanes, belt loaders to move cargo, and refrigeration trucks to load food onto planes.

Rempel noted the new GSE building will be a huge improvement over the current outdated facilities. Located right beside the terminal, the GSE building is inside the primary security line of the airport.

The location will save time, money and fuel, making the entire airport more efficient, the WAA states.

The contractor of record for the project is Con-Pro Industries with LM Architectural Group providing the design.

“I have talked to our own engineering team here,” says Michael Badejo, the WAA’s communications specialist. “They tell me that this project is straightforward in terms of the construction itself – although there are unique aspects especially with this being used for the post-security side of the airfield.”

Badejo reports the entire cost of the project is being paid for by airport funds. No government funding is involved.

The new GSE building is expected to open in the fall of 2019.

Winnipeg Richardson International Airport has a $3.4-billion economic impact and supports over 17,000 jobs. By passenger size, it is Canada’s seventh busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic and 11th in terms of aircraft movement, having handled just over four million passengers and 121,000 aircraft movements last year.
