Alberta school renovation program gives a status report

EDMONTON — The Alberta government has announced it is near completion of its school expansion and renovation program.

Since May 2015 the government has funded 244 school projects and 169 are complete with 12 more expected to be complete by June 2019.

During the 2018-19 school year, a government release said, 37 projects have opened or will open, with 15 new schools, seven replacement schools, three additions and 12 modernizations. Twenty-five of the 37 school projects are complete.

Four new schools and two modernizations were completed in Calgary. Other completed new schools were built in Fort Saskatchewan, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, St. Albert and Strathmore.

Edmonton Public Schools projects included Ross Sheppard High School, a modernization project which will add a new gymnasium, fitness facility and drama theatre and will push the total square metres of the school from 20,520 to 23,937. Three other Edmonton schools are also being modernized.

Three new schools are also planned along with two replacement schools. Ivor Dent for kindergarten to Grade 9 opened in September 2017 and Mill Creek School for kindergarten to Grade 6 is opening later this month.

“We are thankful to government for funding many of our infrastructure requests. Having safe, comfortable, warm learning environments for our students makes a tremendous difference. Our needs continue to be great across the city, especially at the high school level, and we look forward to continuing to work with government,” Edmonton Public School Board chair Michelle Draper said in a statement.
