CALGARY, ALTA. — The City of Calgary brought a revised alignment and other changes for the Green Line project to city council on June 1.
The Green Line Committee heard reports on an updated Stage 1 route including a bridge over the Bow River, a surface alignment on Centre Street N. and a surface station at 16 Avenue N., and a below-grade station/portal at 2 Avenue S.W. to be integrated into the Eau Claire Market redevelopment site.
Additional changes include a 9 Avenue N. station in Crescent Heights, a 7 Avenue underground station as well as at 4 Street S.E., and an underground alignment on 11 Avenue in the Beltline.
“This updated alignment provides a high-quality transit system while addressing previous concerns about budget, construction risk and customer experience. It helps us deliver the full Stage 1 route from 16 Avenue N. to Shepard and deliver the best value for Calgarians,” Green Line general manager Michael Thompson said.
“High quality transit, like LRT, is a necessity for cities to grow, be attractive to a talented workforce, and to be competitive economic centres, locally and internationally. With this in mind, the Green Line is planned for long-term city building opportunities and spurring redevelopment and investment opportunities in Calgary businesses and communities.”
The Green Line project team first advised city council of the need to review Stage 1 In August 2019 citing customer experience concerns, cost estimates rising 10 per cent over the project’s $4.9 billion budget and construction risks as designs for a tunnel under the Bow River and stations downtown indicated the structures would have to go eight storeys underground. Stage 1 was originally approved by council in June 2017.
“The updated Stage 1 alignment can be delivered within budget, reduces project risks and improves customer experience while achieving the project vision,” a statement on the Green Line information site said.
Main construction of the Green Line is scheduled to begin in 2021.
