Victoria begins work on skatepark, bike track

VICTORIA β€” Get ready to bust a move in Victoria.

Construction has started on the new skate and bike amenities for Topaz Park.

Concept designs for the new amenities were developed through extensive community engagement, including input from the skate and bike community, and were approved by council in August.

β€œThe start of construction is an exciting step toward bringing these world class park amenities to this neighbourhood,” said Hillside-Quadra neighbourhood liaison Councillor Ben Isitt in a statement. β€œParks like this build healthy communities and this project will deliver an active community hub for the neighbourhood and attract riders of all skill levels throughout the region.”

The parks as well as the replacement of an artificial turf sport field are part of an initial $8 million investment in improvements guided by the Topaz Park Improvement Plan, adopted in 2018.

β€œAfter many months of planning and consultation with representatives of the biking and skateboarding communities, the project team is excited to begin construction of these new park amenities,” said Thomas Soulliere, director of parks, recreation and facilities.

The additions include a skatepark with features and terrain for tricks, an asphalt bike pump track designed for a range of skill levels, integrated shared pathways and social spaces, and a sustainable approach to stormwater management.

The city also worked with artist Germaine Koh to integrate their work into the design. Artwork designs include a series of interactive sculptures inspired by native plants that celebrate energy flows around the site from human movement, natural forces and urban systems. The public washrooms and parking lot near Topaz Avenue and Blanshard Street are closed for the duration of construction. Public washrooms and parking are available on the east side of the park off Glasgow Street. The new skate and bike parks are expected to be open for use in summer 2022.
