Feds fund new solar project in Inuvik

INUVIK, N.T. — The federal government has announced funding for a new solar energy project in Inuvik, N.T.

Nihtat Energy Ltd., a northern Indigenous-owned and operated company, is developing a one-megawatt solar farm on a brownfield site in the municipality. The project is expected to save the community $1 million in diesel costs per year.

The project will be funded from a new federal program, the Clean Energy for Indigenous and Remote Communities Hub, which will allocate $5.66 million.

Construction of the project is expected to be completed by the end of this year and will create six construction and four operations jobs in the Gwich’in community.

Nihtat Energy has previously developed power systems for the Northmart Solar Residential Program, Mackenzie Hotel and the Inuvik Satellite Station Facility, replacing diesel.

“This project demonstrates the value of developing collaborative approaches to project planning and development in remote communities, which include local project developers and the utility,” stated Nihtat Energy CEO Grant Sullivan in a release.
