Skills Canada BC holds a competition and informational exposition every year at the Tradex in Abbotsford, B.C. Seccondary and post-secondary students from across the province compete for gold medals and the chance to advance to the national level and prove themselves in their chosen skilled trade.
This year, the Journal of Commerce attended the event and interviewed several judges at the event who ultimately decide who will win based on a series of criteria including following plans and drawings, safety and whether the students can complete the assigned task within a set time period.
Amongst those interviewed were Thompson Rivers University School of Trades and Technology chairperson Tom Haag, Trowel Trades Training Association instructor Larry Hyde and University of Fraser Valley applied and technical studies associate professor Pat McGurk.
