B.C. reviewing WCB system

JOC News Service
B.C. reviewing WCB system

VICTORIA, B.C. – The province of B.C. is asking the public to give their input on its workers’ compensation system and how to shift the system to become more worker-centred. The province will also ask residents how it can increase worker and employer confidence.

Officials will hold public hearings and accept written feedback until July 19.

The public and interested stakeholders are invited to share their views until July 19, 2019. Those interested in commenting can submit written feedback by email to Info@wcbreview.ca or by filling in a questionnaire online.

The province will host open, public hearings in 14 communities around the province. To speak at a hearing, interested parties can email Info@wcbreview.ca or call 1-833-633-6790.

Injured workers will be reserved time to speak at the hearings to ensure their input is put on the record to improve the workers’ compensation system.

The process began in April when Minister of Labour Harry Bains appointed retired labour lawyer, Janet Patterson, to conduct the independent review.

Patterson has been tasked with assessing the system’s policies and practices that support injured workers’ return to work. She will also assess the policies through a gender and diversity-based analysis.

The review will explore modernizing WorkSafeBC’s culture to reflect a worker-centric service delivery model and recommend potential amendments to the Workers Compensation Act. The public hearing schedule for the review is as follows:

  • Surrey – June 14, 15
  • Castlegar – June 17, 18
  • Nanaimo – June 20
  • Campbell River – June 21
  • Vancouver – June 24, 25
  • Chilliwack – June 27
  • Williams Lake – July 2, 3
  • Kamloops – July 4
  • Cranbrook – July 8, 9
  • Kelowna – July 10
  • Victoria – July 11
  • Fort St. John – July 15, 16
  • Prince George – July 17
  • Terrace – July 18, 19
