If there’s one constant in the labour market over the last two years as the construction industry and other key economic drivers have been pummeled by the pandemic, it’s unpredictability.
Job numbers surge as COVID waves subside and society opens back up, only to dip again as a new variant appears. Construction seems to have weathered the storm to an extent with labour statistics indicating low unemployment rates in several Canadian cities including Ottawa-Gatineau, Vancouver and Montreal. Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver led total dollar-volume construction starts in 2021.
Provincial governments are also making moves to shore up their economies with employment plans recently released from British Columbia, Ontario and Alberta.
