Saskatoon, Sask. – A Saskatoon contractor has been fined $19,600 after pleading guilty to failing to protect its workers.
Corval Contracting Ltd. was found to have failed to ensure that workers used a fall protection system at necessary areas on a job site.
The charges stemmed from an October 13, 2017 incident in Saskatoon when one of Corval’s workers fell from the roof of a house and struck his head on a steel telephone post. The company was fined $14,000 plus a surcharge of $5,600 by Saskatoon Provincial Court this month. Another charge was stayed.
According to WorkSafe Saskatchewan, falls are one of the most prevalent injury-causing hazards in the construction industry.
“Workers should always be outfitted with safety gear appropriate for the job they are doing,” read a statement from the province. “Equipment should be inspected daily, and any worn or damaged equipment should be replaced.”
