Workers injured after Site C bridge pier collapses
BC Hydro - Crews do site preparation along Highway 29 at Halfway River in February for the construction of 3.7 kilometres of new highway and a 1-km long bridge. This month two workers were injured while doing bridge work after a pier collapsed.

Two construction workers at a bridge project for the Site C Dam have been injured in a pier collapse.

“On Sunday morning, a serious incident occurred on the Highway 29 Halfway River Bridge,” said the Ministry of Transportation in a statement. “Two workers were injured, and both were transported to the hospital. The workers were performing work on one of the piers when it collapsed. WorksafeBC is investigating the incident.”

The province awarded $104.6-million construction to Eiffage-Infracon Halfway River Joint Venture last October. The work includes 3.7 kilometres of new two-lane highway and the construction of a new one kilometre-long bridge crossing the Halfway River, about 500 metres north of the current structure.

Located approximately 45 kilometres northwest of Fort St. John, the Halfway River segment is one of several realignments planned along Highway 29. This work is being completed as part of BC Hydro’s Site C hydroelectric project. Construction of the Halfway River segment is expected to wrap up in the fall of 2022.

Creating the Site C reservoir will require approximately 30 kilometres of Highway 29 to be realigned.
