Dozer operator missing after machine falls through tailings pond ice

Crews are searching for a bulldozer operator at a Suncor’s Base Plant mining site in Alberta after the vehicle went through the ice of an inactive tailings pond.

A Suncor spokesperson confirmed that at approximately 3 p.m. on Jan. 13 crews responded to reports from Base Plant that a dozer had gone through the ice and its operator, a Christina River Construction employee, could not be located.

“Unfortunately, we can confirm that the dozer operator is unaccounted for,” said Erin Rees, senior media relations adviser for Suncor. “Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and coworkers of this individual.”

Rees added that Suncor’s emergency services team responded immediately and continues with response activities.

“Supporting the safety and well-being of our people remains our number one priority and we have activated critical incident stress debriefing resources,” she said.
