Holt Creek Trestle undergoes repairs

HOLT CREEK TRESTLE, B.C. – The Holt Creek Trestle, located along the Trans Canada Trail between Shawnigan Lake and Lake Cowichan in British Columbia is closed for rehabilitation work.

The trestle, which serves as a bridge for horseback riders, cyclists and pedestrians, originally opened in 1922 and was part of a rail line until 1991 when it was transferred to the province for ownership and maintenance.

The trestle is adjacent to Glenora Trails Head Park, which acts as an eastern gateway to Cowichan River Provincial Park, the central portion of the Cowichan Valley Trail, the Cowichan River Footpath and Glenora Riverside Park, explains a release.

The Province of B.C. will assess the structure to determine the scope of work needed and form project timelines, with an estimate that work will be complete by summer 2018.

Signs for an alternate route through the adjacent provincial park will be marked on the trestle duration rehabilitation work.

The B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure maintains the trestle and most recently upgraded the structure in 2002 by adding pedestrian railings and engaging in structural rehabilitation work.
