Manitoba plans replacement overpass for Portage la Prairie

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, MAN. — The Province of Manitoba recently announced it is in the initial stages of replacing the aging overpass along PTH 1A at the Trans-Canada Highway on the west side of Portage la Prairie, Man.

According to Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler, the structure was built in 1968 and is nearing the end of its life cycle. Design work is slated to get underway later this year.

“This overpass has also been struck a number of times over the past 10 years and is currently only used in one direction, diverting some traffic through Portage la Prairie,” said Schuler in a statement.

The height of the structure as well as other national design standards will be taken into consideration during the design process, a release adds.

When the work begins and during removal of the existing structure, safety will be a primary concern, with appropriate signs and traffic controls in place.

“The current limited use of the overpass is safe, but it is time to look at replacing it to ensure the future safe and efficient movement of people and goods,” said Schuler.  “As construction season ramps up for the spring and summer, we remind all motorists to be careful around work areas and slow down.”
