EDMONTON — Planned improvements to the railway crossing at 50th Street and the Canadian Pacific Railway line will be moving ahead thanks to $39.8-million in funding recently announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The project, which is expected to reduce congestion and travel times in the city, includes the widening of 50th Street to six lanes between 76 and 90 Avenues, a new underpass constructed beneath the railway crossing north of the Sherwood Park Freeway, reconstruction of the intersection at 82 Avenue and 50th Street and new sidewalks and shared use paths along 50th Street.

The Province of Alberta will contribute up to $28.3 million to the 50th Street project, and the City of Edmonton will cover the remaining project costs. The total cost is estimated at $87.5 million.

Construction of early utility works is expected to start in 2019, however, the prospective contractor won’t mobilize onsite until 2020. Completion of the project is slated for 2023.

The city will be holding a public information session on June 26 to share more details about the project.

The federal funding announced is a result of the National Trade Corridors initiative which supports projects that address transportation bottlenecks and congestion along Canada’s trade corridors, support economic activity the physical movement of goods and people, improve the movement of goods to markets around the world, help the transportation system withstand the effect of climate change, and adapt to new technologies, explains a release.

The Government of Canada previously announced it has committed $10.1 billion over the next 11 years in trade and transportation projects.
