Construction starts on 36 supportive housing units in Prince Rupert

PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. — Construction has begun on 36 supportive housing units that will provide safe and secure homes with 24/7 support to residents experiencing homelessness.

The province is investing $7.1 million in capital and construction costs, and an annual operating subsidy, for the project and the homes, which are funded through the Building BC: Rapid Response to Homelessness program.

These funds are part of a greater provincewide investment of $291 million to build 2,000 homes throughout B.C.

The modular units will be built on Park Avenue, on lands provided by the City of Prince Rupert, adjacent to Prince Rupert’s women’s shelter called Transition House.

The modular units will be supplied and constructed by a B.C. manufacturer, Horizon North. It is expected that residents will be able to move into the building by early 2019.

Christine White, executive director of North Coast Transition Society (NCTS), which owns the shelter, says the need for sustainable supportive housing has grown over the past 10 years in Prince Rupert.  “We believe that the changes the government is implementing will provide the tools for NCTS to further help people become permanently housed in stable housing. Our aim is to help people help themselves so they, in turn, move forward with their lives,” she said in a statement.
