Multiple Saskatchewan affordable housing projects taking shape

REGINA — With the help of a provincial and federal funding boost that has a combined total of $6.7 million, more than 50 affordable housing units over seven projects will take shape across the province.   

The Biggar Group Home with Prairie Branches Enterprises is such a project.  It received $1 million in provincial funds towards construction, which was completed in July.

The project, that Eunice Washkowsky, the executive director of Prairie Branches Enterprises, says has been a long-time dream for the agency will allow them to continue to support people in need by providing a new accessible home. 

“Their quality of life will be greatly enhanced by this new home, which is the most important thing that we can provide to these individuals,” she says. “It is a beautiful addition to our agency and will be truly life changing”

According to a provincial media release, funding for the seven projects was announced for the following communities:

  • $2.54 million for the Northern Town of La Ronge for construction of 10 affordable rental units for seniors in La Ronge;
  • $1.1 million for Pinehouse Housing Corporation – nine rental housing units for families in Pinehouse Lake;
  • $765,500 for Stewart Properties – 10-unit affordable co-housing project in Saskatoon for pre- and post-natal women living with or at risk of HIV;
  • $640,000 for Methy Housing Corporation – six rental housing units for single-parent families in La Loche;
  • $612,500 for the Canadian Mental Health Association, Prince Albert – six units for individuals with complex needs and mental illness; 
  • $570,000 for Gabriel Housing Corporation – six units in Regina for families with complex needs who require support services to live independently; and
  • $500,000 for the Battleford Indian and Metis Friendship Centre – eight-unit co-housing project for homeless individuals.
