Construction begins on Saskatchewan co-housing project

JOC News Service

NORTH BATTLEFORD, SASK. — A new co-housing project in North Battleford, Sask. is underway.

The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan along with the Battlefords Indian and Metis Friendship Centre (BIMFC) announced the start of construction of the eight-room facility on Aug. 23.

The facility is meant for hard-to-house individuals in the North Battleford area and is located within walking distance of the Battlefords Friendship Centre, which provides communities services to the Indigenous and metis population in the area.

“For up to eight hard to house individuals, these new units are more than just safe and affordable places to live, they are key to help break the cycle of homelessness and to a better life for the residents who will call them home,” said federal Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Ralph Goodale in a statement.

The federal government and Saskatchewan are putting $580,000 toward the project through the federal/provincial 2014-2019 Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement. The City of North Battleford is contributing $108,000 to the costs of the land and site servicing.

“The vision and commitment of the BIMFC to help improve the lives of some of Saskatchewan’s most vulnerable individuals is commendable,” said Paul Merriman, Saskatchewan’s minister of social services and the minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.

“Our government shares this goal, and we are excited to support this project and, most importantly, the vulnerable individuals who will soon have a place to call home with the support services they require. We congratulate everyone involved for making this important project happen, and for supporting those in greatest housing need.”

BIMFC has also received a $130,000 Community Development Corporation grant from the Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs for the project, and an extra $10,000 has been approved by the Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation.
