B.C. project problems a ‘failure of political leadership’

Construction industry stakeholders are expressing frustration and concern with the number of projects in British Columbia that are facing challenges getting off the ground or have been cancelled altogether. For example, a proposed bridge that would have replaced the aging George Massey Tunnel was scrapped in favour of a smaller crossing and improvements to the existing tunnel; a rendering shows what light rail transit would have looked like in Surrey, but that project was scrapped by the city and the Mayors’ Council in favour of a SkyTrain extension; and the Kitimat LNG project made headlines recently as protestors and the RCMP clashed at the site where a pipeline carrying natural gas from the Dawson Creek area to Kitimat was to get underway.

After years of planning and millions of dollars spent, the Massey Bridge project came to a screeching halt late last year. An independent review by B.C.’s NDP government now recommends going back to the drawing board after construction on the bridge had already begun.
