Winnipeg shelter project gets federal funding boost

WINNIPEG — Winnipeg officials recently announced the federal government will contribute more than $1.8 million for the Phase 2 renovation project of the Winnipeg Centre of Hope Main Building.

The project is also receiving assistance from the Thomas Sill Foundation Inc., the Manitoba Real Estate Association Shelter Foundation and the Winnipeg Foundation.

The centre will help the Salvation Army provide emergency and transitional shelter and services to individuals with mental health or addiction issues who are have difficulty getting housing.

The Winnipeg Centre of Hope provides temporary and transitional housing for the homeless, nearly homeless, or at risk of being homeless. The centre also gives clients resources to interrupt the cycle of homelessness, explains a press release.

More than 11,000 people used the centre in 2017. That same year, 113,491 sheltered bed nights were used and over 180,000 meals were served.

“Our Government is dedicated to helping those in need, which is why we are proud to be investing in this project,” said Robert Falcon-Ouellette, member of parliament for Winnipeg Centre, in the release. “The Winnipeg Centre of Hope is more than just a safe and affordable place to spend the night, it is a key to a better life for the vulnerable individuals who come here when they have nowhere else to go.”
