Prince George care home plans rethought after closer look
CITY OF PRINCE GEORGE — Plans to build a care facility in Prince George, B.C. are going back to the drawing board after a closer look from developers.

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Plans to develop part of Waltrous Park in Prince George, B.C. into a privately owned extended care facility have been nixed after a closer look from the developer.

However, the city noted that a care facility is needed and the parties will continue to work on a new plan.

The Watrous Park site was initially considered by the developer because it is city-owned land in the area of the hospital with sufficient space to allow for a facility of its size. According to officials, the proposed purchase price of the land was at market value, which would offset the cost of relocating the lawn bowling green at Watrous Park as well as the playground.

As part of the city’s land purchasing process, several stages of public consultation must be satisfied before the project can go to a public hearing in front of city council.

The development team gathered comment from the surrounding neighbourhood and the Lawn Bowling Club. More detailed estimates for site preparation were also developed, given that the site had previously served as an outdoor public swimming pool and the pool’s old foundation would need to be removed.

After completing this process, the developer decided not to proceed with the project at Watrous Park.

“The city believes that an extended care facility is still needed within the community and so will continue to work with the developer to identify alternative sites,” said city officials in a media release.
