NELSON, B.C. — B.C. is working with Selkirk College to build a new student residence at the campuses in Castlegar and Nelson.
The province will be providing $29.1 million towards the $31.1 million project. The remaining funds will be provided by the college and Columbia Basin Trust, according to a news release.
The Castlegar campus building will introduce 112 new student beds while Nelson will receive 36 new beds.
The housing is expected to be nearly 35 per cent lower than relative housing costs, the release states.
The buildings will both be made with mass timber and modular wood materials. The residences are expected to be fully operable by January 2024.
“As a young student from a rural community attending post-secondary for the first time, having specialized housing on-campus eased my nerves during a very stressful time. Living on campus has been essential for my ability to attend classes and labs, giving me the housing security I need to focus on my studies,” said Emma Russell, a Selkirk College student, in the release.
Both buildings will meet CleanBC’s energy-efficient requirements for new buildings.
