VIDEO: The Keystone XL project’s many challenges
PROVINCE OF ALBERTA

The Keystone XL project has faced many challenges since more than a decade ago when it was proposed by TransCanada, now called TC Energy, as a link between Alberta oil and an existing U.S. pipeline network. The latest wrinkle in the Keystone saga occurred on Jan. 20 when President Joseph Biden rejected the project on his first day in office.

The project was also initially approved by the Canadian government and the outgoing Bush administration in the United States but was struck down by the Obama administration before being revived by former President Donald Trump. It then hit many regulatory hurdles and extensive protest by environmental and Indigenous groups but finally restarted in 2019.

Canadian political leaders including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Alberta Premier Jason Kenney expressed concern over Biden’s actions but as of now TC Energy has suspended work on the pipeline and laid off more than 1,000 workers.
