Potentia and Greengate enter Microsoft deal to supply renewable energy

STETTLER, ALTA. — Microsoft has partnered with Potentia Renewables Inc. and the Greengate Power Corporation for a 15-year renewable energy supply contract.

The energy will be purchased through Paintearth Wind Project LP of which Potentia owns 75 per cent and Greengate owns 25 per cent.

Paintearth will be supplying Microsoft with 543 GWh of renewable energy every year throughout the length of the agreement.

“Renewable energy supply contracts like this agreement with Potentia and Greengate are key to meeting our goal of contracting 100 per cent of our energy consumption with renewable sources by 2025,” said Chris Barry, president of Microsoft Canada, in a statement.

The Paintearth Wind project is currently being constructed on 31,000 acres of land southeast of the Town of Stettler, Alta. Thirty-eight wind turbines will be constructed and the land will still be used for cultivation and grazing by the landowners, according to the company’s website.

It is expected to enter commercial operation in 2023.
