On this episode of the Construction Record Podcast, digital media editor Warren Frey speaks with Diana Lopez, a Campus Living Lab research manager with the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Sustainability Initiative.

Lopez talked about the UBC Embodied Carbon Pilot program, a multi-year research study on the practice of conducting life cycle assessments (LCA) to quantify embodied carbon emissions from Building materials. She also explained the practice of whole-building LCA, where the entire building is considered holistically in an LCA exercise.

Lopez also addressed the learning opportunities for practitioners stemming from the pilot, the role of mass-timber and explained strategies to reduce embodied carbon in buildings.
