On this episode of the Construction Record Podcast, digital media editor Warren Frey speaks with ConstructConnect chief economist Alex Carrick and senior economist Michael Guckes about the highs and lows of the global economy as we reach the end of 2022.

Carrick explained how geopolitical events such as both the war in Ukraine and President Xi’s in China’s rise to new levels of autocracy has shifted economic trends, as well as the continued wave of baby boomer retirements boosting both the travel and medical sectors.

Guckes pointed to the same cohort of boomers as emblematic of the loss in productivity as they leave the workforce and institutional knowledge and experience is lost as new generations move to prominent positions.

Both Carrick and Guckes also gave a preview of the topics they’ll be covering at the upcoming ConstructConnect annual economic webcast on Nov. 15. Titled “Resources for a World of Economic Uncertainty,” the event will also feature American Institute of Architects chief economist Kermit Baker, Associated General Contractors of America chief economist Ken Simonson and ConstructConnect senior director of product strategy Fonda Rosenfeldt and vice-president of marketing innovation Paul Hart.
