This week it’s an all-western Canada edition of the Construction Record podcast with Journal of Commerce staff writer Russell Hixson and digital media editor Warren Frey looking at some of the recent stories they’ve covered. Russell has a story online about Belle Construction, a female-run and operated firm that was given permission by B.C.’s Human Rights Tribunal to hire only women to further their presence at the contractor and skilled trade level.

Russell also spoke to the City of Coquitlam, which has complied their residential construction regulations into an easy to understand set of materials that synthesizes many different sources of information, and wrote about the Architecture and Design Film Festival, which is coming to Toronto and Vancouver and highlights several Canadian thought leaders through a series of documentaries.

Warren and Russell also visited Solid Rock Steel in Surrey, B.C on their recent Steel Day open house and spoke to general manager Peter Steunenberg about the challenges and opportunities about working on steel fabrication in the Lower Mainland, and Warren attended a B.C. Construction Roundtable featuring a talk with Malachy O’Doherty from Enterprise Ireland, who addressed the economic benefits of trade and collaboration between Ireland and Canada and the impending challenge of Brexit.
