Eglinton East LRT project reaches milestone; Crosstown opening date may be in sight
CITY OF TORONTO — Together with the Toronto Transit Commission, the City of Toronto is planning a rapid transit line (future Line 7) to span across eastern Scarborough called the Eglinton East LRT. It will include an LRT operating within the centre of the roadway on a dedicated guideway, separated from vehicle traffic.

TORONTO — The City of Toronto has announced a major milestone in relation to the Eglinton East Light Rail Transit (LRT) project just as rumblings begin to emerge about the beleaguered Eglinton Crosstown LRT tentatively opening in September.

The city reported recently that the Eglinton East LRT project has completed the transit and rail project assessment process, thus concluding a key environmental component.

Together with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), the city is planning a rapid transit line (future Line 7) to span across eastern Scarborough.

The project has a route extending 18.6 kilometres from Kennedy Station to Malvern Town Centre via the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus and 27 stops.
CITY OF TORONTO — The project has a route extending 18.6 kilometres from Kennedy Station to Malvern Town Centre via the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus and 27 stops.

It will include an LRT operating within the centre of the roadway on a dedicated guideway, separated from vehicle traffic; a route extending 18.6 kilometres from Kennedy Station to Malvern Town Centre via the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus; 27 stops; public realm improvements such as protected bikeways, wider sidewalks, multi-use paths and greenery; a maintenance and storage facility at Conlins Road and Sheppard Avenue East for LRT vehicles; and an estimated 15 traction power substations.

There will also be a New Military Trail roadway through the U of T campus, a realignment of Eglinton Avenue East at Kingston Road, a realignment and extension of Beath Street in the West Hill community, an extension of Rodda Boulevard and a reduction from four to two vehicle travel lanes on Neilson Road between Malvern Town Centre and Sheppard Avenue, the project website reads.

Meanwhile, while Metrolinx wouldn’t confirm an early fall 2025 opening for the Crosstown LRT, a spokesperson did provide this update: “We continue to make progress on the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, with testing and commissioning still underway on the project. As noted previously, we need to have confidence that key milestones are being met, and once we have full confidence in the schedule, we will share that with the public.”
