EDMONTON — As part of Alberta’s continued investments, several school modernization projects have been announced across the province.
The Elk Island Catholic School Board has received funding in Budget 2018 for the extensive modernization of École Père Kenneth Kearns Catholic Elementary School in Sherwood Park, Alta.
Originally built in 1967, the building will get a 600-square-metre addition for expanded learning spaces and a new 430-square-metre gymnasium in the southwest corner of the building. The existing gymnasium will be redeveloped into a new library, with classroom storage areas and offices, explains a release.
The current library will be converted into two classrooms and flex spaces. Other work includes creating accessible washrooms, masonry, circulation improvements and reconfiguration of the front entry space. The funding announced for the project is estimated at roughly $7.5 to $8 million.
Another modernization project recently announced by the province is the Northland School Division’s Mistassiniy School in Wabasca, Alta.
In 2014, funding for a new school was approved for the school division, however, following a value scoping workshop in 2016 and further deliberations with the community, plans have now been changed to extensively modernize this 39-year-old facility instead of new construction, explains a release.
This project will also see a new gymnasium as well as the creation of additional classroom space along with upgrades to the building’s mechanical and electrical systems. Approximately $18.9 million has been set aside for the project.
All of Alberta’s school projects are eligible for solar system funding in the amount $750 in an effort to help reduce energy costs.
