CALGARY – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced May 16 that the federal government will contribute up to $1.53 billion for Calgary’s Green Line Light Rail Transit project.
The contribution is the largest of its kind for an Alberta infrastructure project.
The first stage of the project involves the design and construction of 20 kilometres of track, 14 stations and a fleet of 70 low-floor light rail vehicles. Eight bridges, four tunnels, three park-and-ride facilities and a vehicle maintenance and storage facility will also be required. Construction of the first stage is expected to start in spring 2020 and be complete by late 2026.
“Today’s historic investment in Calgary’s public transit system will make it easier for people to get around and connect to the services they need, make our air cleaner, and create thousands of jobs for Canadians,” Trudeau said.
Once in service, the Green Line will provide a direct route to the downtown core for riders in Calgary’s north and southeast communities.
Part of the funding for the project comes from the $3.3-billion allocated to Alberta through a bilateral agreement signed on April 3 to support projects over the next decade involving public transit, green infrastructure, community infrastructure, rural and northern communities.
