VANCOUVER — Two architecture firms have been selected for a new $108 million student residence located on Student Union Boulevard at the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Point Grey campus.
Hotson Architecture and Ryder Architecture will work in association on the project, which a series of buildings totalling an area of approximately 395,000 square feet and will provide 1,000 beds for upper year students.
“The project will introduce more of an urban development around the existing Gage Residences, which will address, reinforce and animate the street frontages along Student Union Boulevard and Wesbrook Mall,” Hotson Architecture principal Kai Hotson said in a statement.
The project will break ground in spring 2019 and is targeted to open in 2021.
“The new UBC Student Residence on Student Union Boulevard represents a tremendous opportunity to meet the significant demand for more student and University housing on campus. This project will provide a 1,000 new beds, supporting the transformation of the Vancouver campus to a more complete university community,” said Student Housing and Hospitality Services (SHHS) director of facilities and building services David Kiloh.
UBC Properties Trust is developing the site on behalf of SHHS.
“As a team, we are driven to maximize efficiencies and value, including designing for regenerative sustainability,” said Ryder Architecture principal Adam James.
“By employing digital processes, such as Building Information Modeling, we will meet the project’s objectives through the optimization of process, the use of less materials and energy, while achieving a cohesive architecture.”
