Feds announce $21.9 million for Port of Prince Rupert infrastructure projects

PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. — The federal government announced recently it will invest $21.9 million in three projects at the Port of Prince Rupert in British Columbia.

A $15 million investment will go towards construction of a two-lane road to connect the Fairview Container Terminal to Ridley Island, with construction set to begin in 2019.

Approximately $3.2 million will go to the design of tracks and bridges to replace the existing single-track Zanardi Rail Bridge, located at the north end of the Ridley Island Causeway at the rail entrance of the Port of Prince Rupert properties.

Canadian National Railway’s northern mainline currently crosses the bridge to transport goods to and from all terminals in the port, and the bridge replacement is intended to improve the flow of trade and reduce delays.

Another investment of $3.7 million will go to the design of train tracks to serve new terminals and a proposed logistics park for the port.

New development sites will be connected to the Canadian National Railway mainline through leveraging and expansion of the existing Road Rail Utility Corridor development platform on Ridley Island.

The corridor was built to enable future development of bulk export terminals from Ridley Island, a Transport Canada release stated.

“The investment announced here today will make our transportation system stronger by addressing urgent capacity constraints at the Port of Prince Rupert and fostering long-term prosperity for our community,” parliamentary secretary to the minister of transport Terry Beech said in a statement.

Once complete, the release stated, trucks will no longer need to travel through the downtown and other populated areas of Prince Rupert, which will reduce travel time from the Fairview Container Terminal to the Ridley Industrial Site from almost 30 minutes to eight minutes.
