EDMONTON – The Canadian Construction Association has awarded Maple Reinders with its CCA Environmental Achievement Award for its role in improving an Edmonton waste management facility.
The award was presented to Maple Reinders for “their success in implementing environmentally-sound practices, and for their work in communicating sustainable approaches as viable options,” a release stated.
The company served as the design-build construction manager of the High Solids Anaerobic Digestion Facility (HSADF), which will be integrated into the existing Integrated Processing and Transfer Facility and Edmonton Composting Facility at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre. Work included design and construction of foundations, equipment installation, building of the steel superstructure and fabrication of cast-in-place concrete including digester and aeration boxes.
Integration of the HSADF into the City of Edmonton’s waste processing system will allow processing of more than 48,000 tonnes of organic waste per year, the release added. Methane from the facility will be used to generate heat and electricity for the centre.
The facility will also increase production of marketable compost and utilization and will “maximize greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction benefits, substantially reducing GHG emissions in Alberta.” The facility is also designed to function with a reduced footprint to allow logistics to flow through the structure and the height was minimized to reduce air volume which also minimizes the flowrate of treated oderous air.
Maple Reinders has previously built two other municipal organics high solids anaerobic digesters in Canada, the Anaerobic Digestion Facility at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre and Harvest Energy Garden in Richmond, B.C.
