FORT MCMURRAY, ALTA. – The government of Alberta has approved the MEG Energy Surmont development plan. The project can now move to acquire environmental licenses and local development permits.
“Through this approval, we are showing our support for industry-led investment in Alberta – particularly when the proponent has undertaken extensive planning and clearly demonstrated its economic viability,” said Minister of Energy Sonya Savage in a press release.
A final investment decision for the project has not yet been made.
The Surmont Project is a proposed multi-phased development with a total design capacity of approximately 120,000 barrels per day. The Surmont leases fall in the southern Athabasca region of Alberta, approximately 80 kilometres south of Fort McMurray, an area that has been extensively explored and developed for natural gas projects and oil resources.
The Surmont leases consist of approximately 80 square kilometres and will feature SAGD bitumen recovery from the McMurray Formation, a reservoir that holds very similar properties to those at Christina Lake. The operation will also feature associated steam cogeneration, well pads, water treatment and other related facilities.
