EDMONTON, ALTA. – Edmonton City Council has formally designated the Stovel Block in the Quarters neighbourhood of the city’s downtown as a Municipal Historic Resource.
The Stovel Block is an Edwardian style commercial building made up of two separate but related structures. Construction on both brick buildings took place between 1910 and 1912.
“The Stovel Block is a somewhat rare example of commercial architecture in the Edwardian style in the The Quarters/Downtown. It’s tied to the early entrepreneurs who made their mark on Edmonton in the early 20th Century. The building has been an important part of The Quarters neighbourhood for over 100 years,” City of Edmonton principal heritage planner David Johnston said.
The city’s Heritage Resources Reserve will provide a $645, 792 grant to assist in rehabilitation of the building’s historical features. The structure has a flat roof with a shallow parapet. Originally the parapet had decorative brick dentilation and a matching arched pediment, but those features were eventually replaced by concrete. The rehabilitation will reintroduce those features and replace the original metal fire escape with small balconettes.
The building is also valued for its association with the Stovel family. James Stovel was one of the first hardware merchants in Edmonton and his wife Mary Stovel supervised construction of the Stovel Block.
